Four me, a 5 star book has to be entertaining and have literary merit and it's very rare that both of these are met. A four star is a book that has met one of these, but not both. A three star is an average read - I enjoyed it, but there were noticable flaws in the book. A two star read - I didn't like it enough to get it to average - most likelty there is nothing wrong with the writing, it's just not to my taste. 1 star - the writing is so bad in the book that I just can't continue with it, would never recommend it, perplexed as to why it was published... The reason why 4 star is the way it is for me is that I read a Robin Hobb book last year and although I felt that it was well written, and the story had merit, I just didn't find it entertaining, but on the other hand I've read books that I found entertaining and very much enjoyed, but they didn't quite reach a 5 star read in terms of writing and it seemed mean to rate the Robin Hobb book a three star.
